Title
Zoomorphic s-shaped mount
Description
English: A zoomorphic s-shaped copper-alloy fitting (Post-Medieval - Modern). The midpoint of the fitting is decorated with a raised rounded lug and two angular projections, one above and one below the lug. The arms of the fitting then expand bulbously and are decorated on each side with a leaf in raised relief. The arms then narrow towards the terminals. Each end of the fitting has an open-mouthed animal terminal. The animal has an upturned snout and a single projecting ear. The decoration on the fitting is three-dimensional and is identical on both the front and the reverse surfaces. The object has a rough pale-mid green patina with patches of red metal showing through. There are a few traces of a white metal coating remaining on all the surfaces. Read (2001:42) features a similar shaped fitting (s-shaped with zoomorphic terminals) but it has a central perforation and is less ornate that this object. Read's is dated to the 17th century and is illustrated suspended from a riveted horse harness mount. Dimensions: length: 31.15mm; width: 17.70mm; thickness: 5.83mm; weight: 9.39g. Read, B. 2001. Metal Artefacts of Antiquity. Portcullis Publishing, Somerset.
