Title
Zoomorphic medieval ring brooch, reverse view
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy zoomorphic ring brooch. The main body of the brooch is formed from an oval frame, 21.14mm long, 17.94mm wide with the frame being 2.86mm wide and 4.68mm thick. Extending from the centre of each long side of the brooch is a semicircular sectioned shaft, that runs vertically for 13mm before turning inwards. Each shaft terminates with a zoomorphic head that is 12.9mm long, 9.62mm wide and 4mm at the thickest point. The heads are flat underneath and domed to the top. They have a blunt curved snout. A moulded ridge running across the middle of the heads denotes the brow and faint, crudely incised lentoids represent the forward facing eyes. Small, pointed, forward facing, integrally moulded ears stand to each corner at the rear of the heads. No other facial features are modelled.

To the rear of the frame at the top and bottom of the oval, is a square shaped notch, presumably part of the holding mechanism for the spring. The pin is entirely missing. The original surface of the brooch survives in tiny patches with a dark green patina. The subsequently exposed areas are mid and bright green. The object weighs 13.02g.

Though an exact parallel could not be found, Dr Kevin Leahy suggests that this is an example of a ring brooch of 13th or 14th century date. He suggests that it is similar in form to an example seen in David Hinton, 2005, 'Gold, Gilt, Pots and Pins', figure 6.12, Oxford University Press.
