Title
Zoomorphic buckle
Description
English: Copper alloy zoomorphic buckle dating to around 1200. The animal has pointed ears and a protruding snout and is dog-like in form. The curve between the legs and underside of the beast create the buckle loop and there is a narrowed pin bar joining the two feet together to complete the loop. On the back of the animal there appears to be another animal head which protrudes over the back of the dog – it is unclear but this may actually be a representation of the animals tail. A similar parallel can be seen in ‘Medieval Artefacts by Nigel Mills, Page 13, Fig. NM 2, described as a lion. The buckle weighs 8.55g and measures 24.8mm in length, 36.3mm in width (from nose to tail of beast) and 7.9mm in thickness.
