e and quail may spread and become asnumerous as in early days, and it is probablethat this bill will actually lead to the conditionof affairs where the number of grouse killed bysportsmen will be greatly increased annually.Experience has shown us that it is not thesportsman, but the dealer in wild game, thatdestroys wild life. If this measure proves to be insufficient toprotect some of the species now threatened withextermination, the next step in the protection ofgame will be the total prohibition of killing ofsuch birds or animals for at least a long periodof time. Extreme measures are necessary un-less we wish our woods, meadows and the fieldsto be entirely devoid of wild life. Madison Grant. ENDOWMENT FUND. BY a special arrangement with the UnitedStates Bureau of Fisheries, the New YorkZoological Society was enabled to co-operate in the recent voyage of the FisheriesSteamship Albatross to Lower California. One of the important results of the expedi-tion from the viewpoint of the Zoological So-ciety was the capture of six young elephantseals for the New York Aquarium. The mem-bers of the Society will doubtless be interestedin hearing not only how these animals were ob- tained at Guadalupe Island, but in an accountof what was accomplished elsewhere during thecruise. As the elephant seal was supposed tobe extinct, its re-discovery is a matter of greatzoological interest. In addition to the younganimals brought back alive, four specimens ofthe large adult seals (three males and a female)were prepared for
