Door middel van twee verhalen uit de Griekse mythologie wordt de overwinning van de Verenigde Nederlanden op haar vijanden onder het leiderschap van prins Willem III (Vrede van Westminster, 19 februari 1674) verheerlijkt. Mercurius en Jupiter wijzen de Nederlandse Maagd met de vrijheidshoed op een openstaand boek van de Metamorphosen van Ovidius waarin scènes uit de verhalen van Apollo en Daphne en Neptunus en Coronis te zien zijn. Hieronder de Nederlandse leeuw die de Franse haan en een Engelse hond verjaagt. Onderaan worden links en rechts de fabelen en de politieke interpretatie uitgelegd.
