Rosa Parks Cup launches BHM 2008 commemoration


The U.S. Embassy’s American Cultural Center, in partnership with the Nigerien National Basketball Federation (FENIBASKET), launched its 2008 Black History Month activities on February 7-8 in the city of Zinder with a two day basketball clinic for young girls and boys, followed by the third annual Rosa Parks Women’s Basketball Cup. This year’s game pitted the women’s regional team of Zinder against the visiting team from Maradi.


The Rosa Parks Cup and accompanying basketball clinic are part of an ongoing program of sports diplomacy activities sponsored by the U.S. Embassy to encourage teamwork, fair play and healthy competition. The Cup game also serves to commemorate the celebration of Black History Month and to acknowledge the contributions of Rosa Parks and other key civil rights leaders in the struggle for freedom and equality.


NOTE:as most women's basketball is connected to the larger "omnisports" clubs in Niger, it is likely this team is the arm of a Maradi based professional club. Name on shirt is illegable, begins "AS " and four letters after.
