teinformation that I had acquired, led me to search for the facts of its origin andhistory. A strange character was revealed to me, — one that I had known throughpoetry, romance, and music, since I was a child, but the true lesson of whoselife I had never seen clearly until now. It was Don Juan. I had always associated the name with that of a gay rake, and not with aredeemed and transfigured life. There lived in Seville, about the year 1671, a most profligate man by thename of Don Miguel de Manara Vecentello de Leca. He was a slave of his evilpassions, an evil influence wherever he appeared ; fascinating the young by hisbeauty, gayety, and display of wealth, and heartlessly alluring them to ruin. Hewas given the name of Don Juan. One night, according to the received story, he left a scene of debaucheryat a late hour, to return to his home. He was alone, and the streets were silent.The night was mild ; a dim moon shone on the Guadalquivir, — the purple-silvermoonlight of Andalusia.
