Heat once devoted himself to the task of a juniorensign ; and from that time onward became an officer in truth, laboring zeal-ously to master the military science, and rising step by step, not by favor, butby merit and seniority. At the age of eighteen, William was in Bluchers army at Waterloo, takingan active part in the overthrow of Napoleon, and witnessing that mighty down-fall. A little later, he was promoted to the rank of major for cool courage underheavy fire ; and from that time on, for nearly half a century, William devotedhimself wholly to the military profession. When he ascended the Prussian throne, there was no more unpopular manin the kingdom. He had put down the revolutionary rising in Berlin with grimand relentless hand; and the people believed that their new monarch was acruel and haughty tyrant.
