Die sterbende Chemda Horovitz blickt auf ihr Leben zurück: Sie denkt an ihre Kindheit im Kibbuz, an ihre Ehe und ihre zwei Kinder, von denen sie eines zu sehr und das andere zu wenig liebte. Aus dem geliebten Sohn Avner wurde ein erfolgreicher, verbitterter Mann, der einer geheimnisvollen Frau verfallen ist. Obwohl Chemdas Tochter, die Enkelin mit Liebe und Aufmerksamkeit überschüttet, entfernt diese sich. Die Tochter will ein Kind adoptieren, um noch einmal von vorn anzufangen und die Familie zu retten. Der Widerstand der Familie treibt sie in eine Sackgasse.

Zeruya Shalev, 1959 in einem Kibbuz geboren, studierte Bibelwissenschaften. Ihr Debüt „Liebesleben“ war ein internationaler Erfolg. Shalev lebt mit ihrer Familie in Jerusalem.
