DescriptionZamek na Mirowie.jpg |
The Mirów Palace (Zamek na Mirowie) in Książ Wielki, a village 50 km north of Kraków, is considered one of the most splendid examples of the Italian Mannersim architecture in Poland. It was built between years 1585-1595 for the Bishop of Cracow Piotr Myszkowski as a fortified palace (palazzo in fortezza), decorated with rusticated stonework, by Santi Gucci from Florence - an architect, sculptor and the court artist of King Sigismund II Augustus, and his successor King Stefan Báthory. Some Late-Baroque interior elements were added in the 18th century, when the palace was bought by the Wielopolski Family. In 1794, during the Kościuszko Uprising, the structure was damaged by Russian troops, and in the early 19th century its owners decided to rebuild it in the then fashionable Neo-Gothic style. The reconstruction was designed by the renowned Berlin architect Friedrich August Stiller. It was started in 1841, but never finished because of the outbreak of the Revolution of 1848. The risalits, their attics and the four courner turrets date from that period. Since then, the building has not changed much. After the Second World War, in 1945 the palace was nationalized by the communist regime. Today, falling into neglect, the building houses an agricultural school. |
