Summary

[edit]
Description

Zachrysia trinitaria (Pfeiffer, 1858) - Cuban brown snail in Florida, USA. (December 2012)

The gastropods (snails & slugs) are a group of molluscs that occupy marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Most gastropods have a calcareous external shell (the snails). Some lack a shell completely, or have reduced internal shells (the slugs & sea slugs & pteropods). Most members of the Gastropoda are marine. Most marine snails are herbivores (algae grazers) or predators/carnivores.

The live snail shown above is a Cuban brown snail, Zachrysia trinitaria. Cuban brown snails are pulmonates - they are air-breathing land snails. This is an invasive species - a pest species. It is considered potentially harmful to Florida's native plants and animals.

Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Camaenidae

Locality: Sanibel Inn, near the southern shoreline of Sanibel Island, southwestern Florida, USA
