Summary

[edit]
Description

Soviet Cold-War era self-propelled anti-aircraft gun Built by Mytishchi Machine-Building Plant (MMZ) and in production from 1964 to 1982 with some 6,500 built. ‘ZSU’ stands for Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka (Russian: Зенитная Самоходная Установка), which translates as "anti-aircraft self-propelled system". The ‘23’ is the bore diameter in millimetres and the ‘4’ is the number of gun barrels. It was named after the Shilka River in Russia, although known by Afghan soldiers as the ‘Sewing Machine’ due to the sound of the guns when firing and also known as ‘Zeus’, derived from ‘ZSU’. The ZSU-23-4 was the single greatest threat to Army Air Corps helicopters during the cold war. This example is on display in the ‘Warsaw Pact 1945-1991’ hall.
