St Peter's Church, Yoxford, Suffolk, memorial to Betts family. Arms: Sable, on a bend argent three cinquefoils gules a bordure engrailed of the second (Betts) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.79)
Description St Peter's Church, Yoxford, Suffolk, memorial to William Betts (1650-1709) and his wife Dorothy Mann (1653-1732), a daughter of Thomas Mann (Source: https://www.geni.com/people/Dorothy-Bettis/6000000025945032472) of Yoxford and Ipswich, probably the "Mr Mann", Recorder of Ipswich with whom John Evelyn dined during a visit to that town in 1677. "William Betts was an active judge, and lord of five Suffolk manors, of which Halesworth was one; he was also Recorder of Dunwich, once a city, now overwhelmed by the ever-encroaching sea". (Doughty, Katharine Frances, The Betts of Wortham in Suffolk, 1480-1905, London, 1912, p.178[1]). See transcript of inscription in: Haslewood, F., Notes on Yoxford Church, published in (Journal of ?) Suffolk Institute, Vol VIII, Part I, 1892, p.45[2]. Arms: Sable, on a bend argent three cinquefoils gules a bordure engrailed of the second (Betts) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.79). The inscription states that he was "sprung from a family distinguished (if any is distinguished) both for faith towards the King and for probity of morals" and that he was skilled in the law (i.e. a lawyer) and was (again) elected by common suffrage as the principal of the "Hospital of Saint Bernard" and "to him the province was committed" but he died two years into office.
