H., and in;ome parts of Rhode Island, there grew up much ele-gance of living and magnificent hospitality; and thereitill remain in these places old houses which show the;plendor that prevailed in colonial days. Slavery existed slavery,n all the early colonies, but in a very mild form ; slave-abor being rarely employed in the fields, but mainlyn private houses. At its first introduction it had been;arnestly opposed ; and when, in 1646, a cargo of Afri-:ans came from the Guinea coast to Boston, the legis-ature ordered them to be sent back to their native;ountry, with a letter of indignation; and they were so;crupulous as to send and bring back one who had beendready taken to Maine.
