Summary
[edit]DescriptionYost’s Department Store Building, State Street and Fairchild Street, Madison, WI (52733880761).jpg | Built in 1923, this Renaissance Revival-style building was originally designed by Frank Riley to house Kessenich’s Department Store, which later became Yost’s Department Store. The original structure was demolished, leaving only the facade, to construct the Overture Center for the Arts, which opened at this end of the block in 2004, and was completed in 2006, being designed by César Pelli. The building is clad in limestone with a bonnet metal roof, a large octagonal glass dome on the roof, which was added when the Overture Center was constructed, and a postmodern interpretation of the original side-gable roof, which was modified with a steeper pitch, shelf in the middle of the slope, alteration of the cupola over the entrance, and additional height to the roof to obscure the new arts center lobby that sits behind the facade. The facade is bent to follow the obtuse angle of the intersection of State Street and Fairchild Street, and features large storefront windows at ground floor with transoms, decorative carved spandrel panels between the first and second floor windows, reproductions of the original tripartite steel windows on the second floor, with the three sections of each window being separated by pilasters, pilasters flaking the building’s bays, a large arched opening on the chamfered prominent central corner of the building with an arched transom over a door that provided entrance to the department store originally, but now provides entrance to the lobby of the Overture Center, which is flanked by two decorative copper sconces, arched bays at the ends of the facade, which once housed additional display windows, but today house windowless egress doors, which have cartouches and circular oxeye windows above them, with the entire facade being topped with a simple cornice featuring cartouches at the corners flanking the entrance bay. The facade today is all that is left of the original building, but was saved and restored thanks to the efforts of preservationists and members of the Madison community due to its architectural and historical significance, along with the adjacent Capitol Theater. The two buildings have been smartly and thoughtfully integrated into the new arts center. The facade is a contributing resource in the State Street Historic District, listed on the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places. |
