Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Birthplace of the National Anthem "Kimigayo" – Sazare-Ishi

This stone is a Sazare-Ishi, marking the birthplace of the singing of the national anthem "Kimigayo." Sazare-Ishi is a type of limestone that, over thousands and tens of thousands of years, dissolves in rainwater, binds together, and grows into a large rock. It has been widely known as a symbol of small stones since ancient times.

The lyrics of "Kimigayo," "Until the pebbles grow into boulders, covered with moss," refer to this transformation of the stone, symbolizing the long-lasting prosperity of Japan.

"Sazare-Ishi" can be found in the precincts of shrines throughout Japan and is treated with great care.

Even today, it is a precious natural monument, revered as a symbol of national peace and family safety.
