fine turret;in fact the turrets at both the east and the west end of the churchare as striking as any feature about it. The octagonal Chapter House, unroofed, but retaining its Perp.windows is also very beautiful, and somewhat suggestive of York. The interior is brought to an abrupt end by the wall necessarilyinserted in the eastern arch of the tower. Here, above a stonealtar-piece, a three-light geometrical window has been placed. In the chapel adjoining the south transept are several noteworthymonuments—one of a crusader and his wife; another a recumbenteffigy with a shield displaying the Saltmarshe arms. This figurealso appears as a crusader. Howden is celebrated for its horse-fair, which begins at the end of Sep-tember and lasts a fortnight. For Hull, seep. 26.- There is a walk round the south side of the church, but on thenorth it is hemmed in by houses. Continuing along the main route (p. 2) we see nothing ofinterest till the towers of York Minster rise almost straight ahead.
