WHITBY. 93 As a claimant to the first rank amongst watering places,Whitby is naturally more frequently compared with Scarboroughthan with any other sea-side resort. Far inferior as a town—inthis respect it is cramped and inconvenient without any atoningpicturesqueness,—about equal in its foreshore and bathing facilities,Whitby is a long way ahead of its more fashionable neighbour inits surroundings both inland and coastwise. The shore north-wards from Robin Hoods Bay is interesting almost as far asSaltburn. The Boulby Cliff, half-way between Whitby and Salt-burn, attains a height of 666 feet, and is the highest round theshores of the mainland of Britain, though from its not being asheer precipice, it is less striking than several others of inferioraltitude. The chief advantage, however, of Whitby over Scar-borough, in the eyes of most of its visitors is its comparativequietness and the less mixed character of its clientele.
