English: York Castle or, as it is better known, Clifford's Tower A fortress was built here by William the Conqueror in 1068 but was destroyed by local dissenters. The castle was rebuilt and destroyed on several occasions but finally, Richard I built a stone castle in the latter part of the 12th century, of which the tower is still standing. The tower on the motte became known as Clifford's Tower following the execution of Roger de Clifford in 1322. |
