Title
Description
English: Following the decision of the High Court to acquit John Demjanjuk of the charge of being 'Ivan the Terrible', he will be deported today to the Ukraine. The unanimous acquittal be the five High Court judges has caused a mixed feeling in Israel. The court handed down its verdict on the basis that there was reasonable doubt that Demjanjuk has been misindentified. Evidence, that had become available from the KGB archives from the former Soviet Union, caused the appeal judges to have serious doubts about the death sentence. Any doubt, the judges said, meant that Denjanjuk could not be executed. Apart from the survivors of Treblinka, who are still convinced that Denjanjuk was the infamous gas chamber operator, there are many who felt that Demjanjuk should be punished for being an auxiliary Nazi SS Guard at the Sobibor and Flosssenberg Concentration camps. Photo shows: Yona Baltman, State attorney in the Demjanjuk trial.
