Yes Youth Can -- Kenya, August 16, 2013, 1000 youth representatives from Nyeri County gathered at the ACK church Hall in Nyeri town to vote in their new constitution and elect their board members. They represented fellow members from the 500 village bunges -- two members from every bunge namely the president and a senior official of opposite gender. Five board members from each of the six constituencies were elected. The elected 30 board members will elect their County president and six other office bearers including the deputy president, accountant, secretary among others. The president and a senior official of the opposite gender will represent the County at the National Youth Bunge Association to exercise a greater voice in national affairs. Through the program, the bunges will receive small grants to support community service and economic activities, as well as helping bunge members prepare applications for grants through the national youth Tahidi Fund or loans through newly-formed youth savings and credit cooperatives. USAID’s Yes Youth Can Central program is a youth empowerment program that supports youth to organize themselves in youth-run and youth-led bunges, (parliaments) through which members democratically elect their own leaders at the village, county, and national level. The bunges provide a structure and a forum for young women and men to mobilize and take action to improve their socioeconomic status. |
