| Description |
English: Yellow Skunk Cabbage (Lysichiton americanus). Yellow skunk cabbage is a member of the Araceae family, originating from north east Asia and western north America. The plant grows in swampy areas, along rivers and lakesides, flowering between March and May; their strong scent is very attractive to pollinating insects. These plants grow beside the pond in the northwestern corner of Alby gardens.
Alby gardens are located adjacent to the Alby Craft Centre and encompass four and a half acres of ground, formerly a poplar plantation and livestock pasture. Starting in 1987, after the great storm during which many of the trees were uprooted, the area was redesigned; presently the lawns are interspersed by four ponds (one with an island); by a 'wild' area and a small wood; by flower beds containing a variety of unusual plants and shrubs; by streams and specimen trees, and by a selection of modern sculptures. |
