English: Yellow Network Rail train passes through Haverfordwest railway station
This is the Network Rail New Measurement Train, a converted and repainted former 125 high-speed train which used to run on the West Coast Main Line. The train is an all-seeing eye that travels the UK's high-speed network looking for problems. It is also an all-hearing ear, monitoring for squeal, which is created when side wear occurs. Equipment on the train takes track geometry measurements in 32 different parameters, including top alignment, lateral alignment, width, curvature and cant of the track, each of which could cause problems if they changed beyond acceptable limits. French company Cybernetics has installed a system of laser line scan video that can spot any flaws or dents in the rail head. It also checks that ballast around the sleepers is at the right level and whether the sleepers are cracked. The Transport for Wales train on the right awaits departure for the terminus at Milford Haven. |
