Summary
[edit]DescriptionYellow Loosestrife, Bishopstone - geograph.org.uk - 1372388.jpg |
English: An unidentified Loosestrife, most likely Lysimachia punctata, at Bishopstone. At one time the herb was thought to have magic properties capable of calming disturbed animals and bringing fights between animals to an end. Hanging bunches to loosestrife under the collars or around the bodies of oxen who worked to land calmed them and made them settle to their work - it had to be magic! In fact, loosestrife repels insects and gnats and when these pests stopped tormenting the animals they would 'loose strife'! It has also been used as a vulnerary, as an infusion to bathe sore eyes and as a gargle.
The tall plants are young teasels and there is a patch of ladies mantle to the right of the picture. |
