35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Coraciiformes; Family: Bucerotidae; Genus: Tockus; Genus species: Tockus flavirostris. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 50 cm; Identification: The yellow-billed hornbill has a yellow bill with red tip and cutting edges. The bare skin on the face and throat is red. The plumage is gray-black on the forehead to nape. It has a black mantle with a white center line. The wings and tail are black and white, and the eyes are a yellowish white; Habitat: Savannas and semiarid regions; Diet: Carnivore: insects and small animals; Reproduction: Breeding occurs from September to March. Nests are built in tree holes. A breeding pair's 2-3 eggs have to be incubated for 24 days before they will hatch; Social Structure: Hornbills are usually seen in pairs or small flocks; Behavior: This species is ground-feeding; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The yellow-billed hornbill can become tame very easily and is often found near human dwellings.
