Summary

[edit]
Description

It was the Shanghai native George Yan, my 2nd instructor on jing hu, who triggered my suddenly 'getting the taste', as he'd put it, at playing it comfortably and well. When we officially begun to relearn the opera to tour China, Yan was employed since he was residing in Honolulu, and had played with some of the greats in his youth.

This is him performing at our party on the eve of departure to China in June 1986. Then he lent me his jing hu (which turned out to have been made in Shanghai in the 40s) for my 1st China tour that summer: The Phoenix Returns To Its Nest (Feng Wanchao).
