35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Bos; Genus species: Bos mutus. Animal characteristics: Height: Shoulder height 160-180 cm; Weight: up to 1000 kg; Identification: The yak has a black-brown shaggy coat with white around the muzzle. The shoulder hump is often drooping. The yak also has two long-spreading horns; Habitat: Alpine tundra and ice plateaus; Diet: Herbivore: grasses, shrubs and snow for water; Reproduction: A single calf is born after a gestation period of nine months; Social Structure: Females live in stable herds. Bulls are solitary or form small bachelor groups of 10-15 animals; Behavior: The yak is a shy species. It is gregarious because it is found in groups of 10-20+, where the largest groups are found during the spring; Status: Endangered; Interesting Facts: The yak has been domesticated and crossed with domestic cattle.
