Title
YORYM-5ACDC7 Early Medieval disc brooch
Description
English: Cast and carved disc brooch dating from the Early Medieval period. The object comprises a flat-sectioned disc with carved and gilt decoration. The decoration is located within the confines of a band of metal, this being the rim of the brooch; the decorative elements were carved, leaving raised lines in the metal. The motif comprises two spirals, separated from each other and the lower half of the motif. The lower half of the motif comprises two outward-facing trumpet-shaped cells with smaller spirals underneath. Traces of gilding survive in across the face of the brooch. There is a perforation at the point of one of the trumpet-shaped cells. The reverse of the object is not decorated; there is a scar located at the nine o'clock position (with the perforation at the twelve o'clock position). This scar is more likely to be the area where something was previously attached (perhaps a catch) than modern damage.
