Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Xenolith in granodiorite in the Cretaceous of California, USA.

Xenoliths are pieces of rock that have fallen from the walls or roof of a cooling magma chamber, or have become entrained in rising masses of magma ("xeno" means "foreign" and "lith" means "rock"). Xenoliths can occur in intrusive igneous rocks or extrusive igneous rocks (= volcanic lava).

The host rock here is part of an extensive, Cretaceous-aged intrusive complex in eastern California called the Sierra Nevada Batholith. The complex consists of numerous individual plutons, many of which are old, cooled magma chambers that were originally beneath ancient subduction zone volcanoes.

Geologic unit: Half Dome Granodiorite, Sierra Nevada Batholith, Late Cretaceous, 89 to 93 Ma

Locality: outcrop next to Tenaya Lake, Yosemite National Park, Sierra Nevada Mountains, eastern California, USA
