Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is a Roman theatre as for type and age. It was earlier described in a category as an Ancient Greek Theatre, but I beg to differ. Travel guide “The Lycian way” has “Today it is thought that there existed a theatre before this one, but it was destroyed by the Romans”. But then it states , as other sources do, that it was rebuilt in the mid-second century AD for a Opramoas of Rhodiapolis who donated 30.000 denars, hardly Ancient Greek coin. By then the town was Roman (Livius site: “The Romans finally annexed it [meant is the whole of Lycia] in 43 CE, creating the new province of Lycia et Pamphylia.”). Wikipedia’s in Dutch, French, German, Italian, English all call it Roman, as do all books I checked. This is one of pictures taken during three visits, between them some restoration took place, it may be going on. In the names of the pictures it is indicated what you see. On many pictures the two tombs just outside the theatre can be seen also.
