however, de-mand a departure, in which case, a safe rule to followis that the injured part should be as close to the plateas possible and the vertical ray should enter immediate-ly over the center of this area. The comfort of the patient must be kept constantlyin mind, and if an arm cannot be completely extended,it is possible to demonstrate lateral displacement offragments by the antero-posterior exposure even if theelbow is flexed at a right angle. The point to rememberis, that it is impossible even with stereoscopic plates totell accurately the amount of displacement that may bepresent in the region of a joint such as an elbow orknee if the plates have been made in one direction only. In the case of the spine the best results are obtainedby raying a comparatively small area at a time with amedium sized diaphragm. For the lateral view it isalmost essential that one should use an intensifyingscreen and remove the tube to a considerable distancefrom the plate, at least thirty inches.
