he air-cooled Coolidge tube will be used exclusivelyand very little, if any, adjustment of current and voltagewill be left to the operator. The tube will require norectifier and will carry safely 5 milliamperes at a suit-able voltage for fluoroscopic work. All radiographicwork should be done with intensifying screens andfilms. The exposure times with screens using this out-fit are approximately the same as for large machineswithout screens. See page 99. The outfit includes a suitable rotary converter tochange 110-volt direct current to a proper alternatingvoltage. A switch is closed in one direction to operateon 110 volt A.C. and in the opposite direction for 110volt D C. Fig. 25. A single push-button switch operatesboth the filament and X-ray currents. For voltagesabove 110, the additional parts needed for adaptationcan be supplied, but are not included in the case. Since ot ^ A.CorD.C. t , Vfl •j>Tt: /7.C.Lff?ofary5_ 7>. AC Fig. 25. Donot expect as much power as from large machines anddo not connect it to any circuit before you ascertain thetype of current. Properly used this will be found avery valuable addition to any hospital equipment. The U. S. Army Portable Unit. By the co-operation of various manufacturers a semi-portable outfit has been developed which may be usedin mobile units. The important features of the outfit are the portablepower plant, the self-rectifying Coolidge tube, and thespecial table. Having a complete generating equipmentit is admirably suited to service in strange territorywhere the electrical supply is not suitable for standardmachines or is likely to fail because of war conditions.
