ARMY incision is made, the guide can be slipped into thewound and, when the proper depth is obtained, it shouldtouch the projectile. As there is, however, certain pos-sible inaccuracy in this instrument owing to the fact thatthe indicator can swing through the arc of a circle, atripod guide and pointer were devised as an improve-ment. This is molded to the skin contour from the chart(Fig. 31) with the socket of the pointer lying in theplane of incision. It is then placed in the correspondingposition upon the patient and three marks made uponthe skin at the ends of the tripod (Fig. 32). The tripodis then replaced upon the chart and the pointer insertedand adjusted so that it reaches the depth of the projec-tile, where it is fixed in position by a thumb screw.
