Summary
[edit]DescriptionWych Elm (Explored) - Flickr - AJC1.jpg |
Well, sort of. "The flowers do look like Wych Elm, but Elms are very difficult, due to hybridisation between the native species and the various cultivars and non-native species that have been planted. In in the only key I would recommend (that within Stace 3rd edition) it depends on leaf shape, venation and length, and crown shape - not flowers or buds. For the long answer, refer to Stace, but my own view is that many Elms can’t be ID’d from specimens, let alone photos. Stace says ‘over large areas the elm population exists solely or largely as hedgerow suckers, and is now largely unidentifiable.’ This is a little dispiriting, but if Stace says its so, you have to believe it! If you have the leaves from middle or short shoots (NOT suckers) in high summer, then its worth a try. ID always has to be from a specimen, in my view – but I never like keys that depend on dimensions." Wych Elm, Ulmus glabra? |
