Deutsch: Friedrich Wilhelm IV. (geb. 1795, gest. 1861, ab 1840 König von Preußen)
Ein König voller Widersprüche 1823 heiratete der Kronprinz Prinzessin Elizabeth Ludovika von Bayern. Die Ehe blieb kinderlos. Friedrich Wilhelm IV. war zwar der erste König, der öffentliche Reden hielt, und er erließ nach seinem Regierungsantritt sogleich eine Generalamnestie für die unter seinem Vater verfolgten „Demagogen“. Er war jedoch durchdrungen von der Idee, dass die Herrschaft des Königs allein auf Gottes Gnade beruhte - eine Verfassung lehnte er deshalb ab. Als am 18. März 1848 vor dem Berliner Schloss die Revolution ausbrach, beruhigte der überraschte Monarch den Aufstand zunächst. Am 5. Dezember 1848 verordnete (oktroyierte) er Preußen ohne Mitwirkung der preußischen Nationalversammlung eine Verfassung, die inhaltlich aber weitgehend den liberalen Forderungen entsprach. Sie garantierte Grundrechte, eine unabhängige Justiz, die Öffentlichkeit der Gerichtsverhandlungen, Presse- und Versammlungsfreiheit und sah ein Zweikammerparlament mit einem frei gewählten Abgeordnetenhaus vor. Sie galt bis 1918. Als die Deutsche Nationalversammlung Friedrich Wilhelm IV. im April 1849 die deutsche Kaiserkrone antrug, lehnte er ab. Im Sommer 1849 wurden in Deutschland die Reste der bürgerlichen Revolution niedergeschlagen - in Sachsen und Baden mit Hilfe preußischer Truppen. Außenpolitisch übte Friedrich Wilhelm Zurückhaltung. Im Krimkrieg (1853-1856) hielt er Preußen neutral. 1858 musste er nach mehreren Schlaganfällen die Regierung seinem Bruder übertragen. |
