Deutsch: Wilhelm II. (1859–1941, Deutscher Kaiser 1888-1918), letzter deutscher Kaiser und letzter König von Preußen.
Wilhelm II. war seit 1881 mit Prinzessin Auguste Viktoria von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg verheiratet, mit der er sieben Kinder hatte. Nach dem Tod der Kaiserin 1921 heiratete er Prinzessin Hermine von Schönaich-Carolath. Innenpolitisch stellte er sich gleich nach Regierungsantritt 1888 gegen den alten Reichskanzler Otto von Bismarck. Er bezog öffentlich Stellung gegen die weitere Verfolgung der Sozialdemokraten, und er vermittelte im Bergarbeiterstreik von 1889. Wilhelm ergriff die Initiative für eine gesetzliche Verbesserung der Arbeitsbedingungen, insbesondere für Frauen, und für ein generelles Verbot der Kinderarbeit in der Industrie. Diese mündete in das Arbeiterschutzgesetz von 1891. Wilhelm II. war ein engagierter Förderer von Bildung und Wissenschaft. 1899 stellte er die technischen Hochschulen in Preußen gegen heftigen Widerstand der alten Universitäten diesen gleich. Der von ihm stark forcierte Ausbau der Kaiserlichen Marine und die damit verbundene sogenannte Weltpolitik wurden zum Markenzeichen der wilhelminischen Ära, trugen aber auch zum Konfliktpotenzial bei, das sich im Ersten Weltkrieg entlud. Erst im Oktober 1918, unter dem Eindruck der unabwendbaren Niederlage Deutschlands und der mit ihm verbündeten Mittelmächte, stimmte Wilhelm der Parlamentarisierung des Reiches zu. |
