Die erste elektrische Straßenbahn der Welt präsentierte Siemens & Halske 1881 in Paris auf der Exposition d'Eletricite auf einer 500 Meter langen Demonstrationsstrecke. 1884 wurde die erste regelmäßig in Deutschland betriebene elektrische Straßenbahnlinie mit Oberleitung von der Frankfurt-Offenbacher Trambahn-Gesellschaft eröffnet. Die Oberleitung bestand noch aus zwei parallelen Schlitzrohren. In den USA entwickelte Frank Julian Sprague 1888 einen Straßenbahnwagen mit Stangenstromabnehmer, der seine Energie aus einem Oberleitungsdraht bezog, und baute damit in Richmond das erste erfolgreiche größere elektrische Straßenbahnnetz auf. Um 1889 befanden sich in den USA. 110 elektrische Bahnen mit Spragues Ausrüstung im Bau oder in der Planung. Im April 1891 wurde in Halle an der Saale das erste innerstädtische elektrische Straßenbahnnetz in Europa eröffnet, mit Straßenbahnwagen erbaut von der Allgemeinen Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) mit Stangenstromabnehmern und Oberleitungsdrähten nach U.S.-Patent. Die AEG hatte 1890 die mit Pferden betriebene Stadtbahn Halle erworben und das Netz auf eigene Rechnung elektrifiziert, um einen Referenzbetrieb zeigen zu können. Bis zur Jahrhundertwende lieferte die AEG die Ausrüstungen für weltweit 70 Straßenbahnbetriebe, unter anderem nach Genua, Kiew, Sevilla, Buenos Aires und Santiago de Chile. 1911 kaufte die Stadt Halle die Hallesche Straßenbahn-AG und betrieb sie als städtisches Unternehmen weiter. |
