Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wrought Iron Fencing on Buckingham Palace Rd This fencing is adorning the front yards of some victorian houses facing Victoria Station.

Wrought iron is one of the most splendid materials for fencing. It consists of almost pure iron with slag inclusions and has a very low corrosion rate. Most of the "wrought iron" made in the last 100 years is actually mild steel which is impure and has a high corrosion rate due to its higher carbon content. The puddling process by which it is produced is exteremely heavy work and requires great care and attention. Although some mechanical processes such as the Aston process have been developed these have never been completely successful and are no longer used. The puddling furnace from the last British manufacturer ? Thomas Walmsley of the Atlas Forge, Bolton ? has been re-erected at Blists Hill museum at Ironbridge Gorge.

Nearly all genuine wrought iron production is nowadays from recycled scrap and is only used in conservation work.

So if you hear of a new wrought iron fence or gate it is almost certainly only made of mild steel.
