Situation map on the condition of the climate on January 2023. In Europe, January 2023 was the 3rd warmest January on record. Much of Europe had above-average air temperatures, including the Balkans and eastern Europe, where New Year's Day experienced record warmth; the Svalbard region also had prominent warm anomalies. Above-average temperatures occurred in the eastern United States, Canada, Mexico and in a southeast-northwest band across western Russia. Below-average temperatures were experienced across Siberia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and neighbouring countries, as well as in Australia.
