and late lamented CardinalManning. When it was conceived of having a Congress of English-speaking people hewas one of the first who was consulted upon the matter. The first proposition was thatit should be held in London, but he, with his wonderful grasp of character, knew thatwith our crippled ideas and habits this was the true field for the expression of theCatholic mind upon all those great social questions which are the very root, not only ofreligion but of the stability of society. It has been my lot to have worked with CardinalManning, closely and intimately, and to have shared his confidence since the year 1853;and when I go back I shall be able, I trust, to place an immortelle upon his grave of theexpression, the Catholic expression, aye, the universal expression, of honor for the deepinterest which he took in the people, irrespective of creed or nationality. CardinalVaughan has been brought up, I may say, under his wing, and he has commissioned methus to convey his sympathy.

Nugent then read the following letter: Archbishops House, Westminster, S. W., Aug. 15,1893. My Dear Mgr. Nugent:—As Mgr. Gadd is not going to the States, I shall be much obliged if you will kindlyrepresent me at the-Columbian Catholic Congress. Kindly express as publicly and asheartily as you can the deep interest with which I follow the life and conduct of theCatholic Church in the United States. The interest is quickened by the personalrelations of friendship which I have long since been happy enough to establish formyself among many of the clergy and laity in America. I rejoice to witness theCatholic Church entering thus deeply into the foundation and structure of the greatcivilization, which is covering so vast an area of the worlds surface.
