Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Workshop Building, Woodhorn Colliery. Built between 1894 and 1908 from yellow Ashington brick with a Welsh slate roof. In the 1950s, the workshops would have been the working place of some 40 men, employed as blacksmiths, joiners and fitters whose job was to keep all aspects of the mine in working order. This and the nearby stables building reflect the important role of pit ponies and horses used for both under- and above-ground haulage. 70,000 ponies were working underground, in the UK, in 1913. By 1984 the numbers had dwindled to 55, many of them at Ellington 47404 in Northumberland. Pip, thought to be the last pit pony, died at Beamish Museum 1244808 in February 2009 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/industry/mining/4682345/Britains-last-pit-pony-dies.html
