[edit]DescriptionWork on the railway line - fitting a fishplate - geograph.org.uk - 1754300.jpg |
English: Work on the railway line - fitting a fishplate One of the workers is busy preparing the fitting of the last of the fishplates which join the lengths of rails. The complemetary fishplate seen on the other side has already been fitted with four bolts, as can be seen in the background. Here the worker can be seen adjusting the boring/milling machine to the rail so that the holes can be drilled with precision. A sheet of plastic has been spread out underneath the work area to catch the oil used in the process and also the steel filings. The small gap between the sections of rail is deliberate so as to allow for the expansions of the rails.
Everybody is waiting for more sand and stones to arrive > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1754217 before the tamper which is due shortly can start doing its job of compacting the trackbed. The line between Reedham and Cantley is closed over the weekend whilst a new track is being laid > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1753536. The old rails and sleepers have been removed > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1751738. They were replaced over night by a new track. Diesel locomotives such as the low emission Class 66725 'Sunderland' > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1753545 have brought the required materials such as rails, sleepers, sand and crushed stone ballast to the section being presently worked on. The trains have also brought a crane, a digger that can move on rails > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1754244 and a JCB. The men will be working day and night so as not to disrupt rail traffic for any longer than necessary and the portable lights positioned along the lineside will illuminate the track at night. |
