Summary
[edit]DescriptionWorcester Cathedral - geograph.org.uk - 706559.jpg |
English: Worcester Cathedral View over Worcester from Fort Royal Hill, the three most prominent buildings from left to right are, the cathedral, the Spire of St Andrew's (Glover's Needle) and the former Giffard Hotel, part of the sixties Lych Gate development. Fort Royal Hill's elevated position providing a good view of the city was taken advantage of by the Royalists in 1651, because during the siege in 1646 Parliamentary forces had positioned their artillery on the hill and had been able to severely damage the city's walls. However, on September 3, 1651, during the final stages of the Battle of Worcester, the Royalist position became untenable and Parliamentaian forces captured Fort Royal and turned the Royalist guns and fired on Worcester. The Commandery is in the trees to the right of the picture |
