| Description |
English: Woolwich pedestrian tunnel was opened on Saturday, 26 October 1912 and was intended for dock and other workers to be able to cross the river without charge at any time, day or night. The entrances north and south are close to the terminals of the Woolwich Free Ferry, operated as such since 1889, although that has always had limited working hours. There has, however, been a ferry across the river nearby since the 11th century at least.
The two vessels currently operating the ferry are the Dame Vera Lynn, named for a locally born singer whose songs were particularly popular during the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Ben Woollacott, named after a 19 year old ferry worker who died in an accident on a ferry here in 2011.
