English: Woolsthorpe: former ironstone quarries This picture gives some idea of the massive job of restoration needed once the quarries which once filled this gridsquare closed in 1973. The area immediately in front of the camera was known as No 3 Quarry (1970-1), which was worked by lorries; everywhere else in this shot, as far south as the B676 Stainby road, was part of the huge No 2 Extension Quarry (1935-73), from which the ore was removed by rail and forwarded to Scunthorpe via the High Dyke Branch.
