Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Woolly Fringe-moss (Racomitrium lanuginosum) [In older works, the name of the genus is given as Rhacomitrium, with an 'h', but the currently-accepted name is as given above.]

This is a common upland species; the specimen shown here was growing on top of a dry-stone wall (a very common habitat for this species). This moss prefers acidic conditions, and is best suited to colonising fairly flat surfaces. There is a long white wispy hair-point at the tip of each leaf, giving the moss a very distinctive white-fringed appearance, and giving rise to its common name of Woolly Fringe-moss.

The book "British Mosses and Liverworts" (1955), by E.V.Watson, comments: "'Racomitrium heath' is the name given to a plant community of exposed mountain-tops in which this species plays a dominant role. In such places R. lanuginosum forms extensive mats, and is not only the most robust and conspicuous bryophyte but also imparts a definite character to the landscape as a whole."
