Summary
[edit]DescriptionWoodhead station and tunnel - geograph.org.uk - 3781.jpg |
English: Woodhead station and tunnel. The famous Woodhead Tunnels start in this square from SK113998, where Longendale meets the Pennines and runs out of dale ! This is the old Woodhead station and the western portal of the 1950s New Tunnel, length 4,888 metres. Built to remove the bottleneck of two older and smaller tunnels, it was closed in 1981. The railway trackbed now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
Behind us, in the rest of the square, is steep moorland hillside. |
