Summary
[edit]DescriptionWoodhead railway station (site), Derbyshire, 1981 (geograph 6890018).jpg |
English: Woodhead railway station (site), Derbyshire, 1981 Opened in 1954 by British Railways on the diverted line from Sheffield Victoria to Manchester through the new Woodhead tunnel, this station closed to passengers in 1964. The railway line was closed and dismantled a few months after this image was taken. View east towards the 1954 tunnel, Penistone and Sheffield. The station, had two short, staggered platforms, still visible 17 years after the last passengers used them. The Sheffield-bound platform is over the river. The Manchester-bound platform is to the right, partially obscured by the electricity pylon. This station replaced an 1844 one slightly closer to the camera position on the old track alignment. |
