Description
English: Pensacola, Fla. (March 16, 2006) - Archaeologists carefully clear sand from the remains of what is believed to be a wrecked wooden ship on board Naval Air Station Pensacola. The archaeologists are conducting a phase II archaeological survey on behalf of the Navy to determine if the remains are historically significant and whether they will be eligible for the National Historic Register. The artifact was discovered during the early construction phase of a new Rescue Swimmer school. Following in the wake of Hurricane Ivan in September of 2004, many buildings at the air station were severely damaged and were later demolished, including the enlisted barracks where the proposed Rescue Swimmer School is currently being built.
