Really good tasty mushrooms this time of year - apparently you shouldn't eat this one raw but does anyone eat raw mushrooms? My mum went through a phase of adding raw mushrooms to salads back in the seventies. I was never convinced. Unmistakable too - with that violet tint. The only other purple mushroom commonly about is the Amethyst Deceiver, which is much smaller and deep purple and despite the name, also edible. Mushroom hunting is less risky than people sometimes imagine. I'm no expert but I have about twenty very distinctive edible species in my head that I can identify with absolute certainty and I stick to them. If I'm in any doubt I leave them alone. |
